The health of our Boxers and their descendants
is the priority in our kennel and is above all other issues. Boxer
is a breed which is exposed to numerous hereditary diseases such
as hips dysplasia, spondylosis and cardiomyopathies such as arrhythmias
and sub aortic and pulmonary stenosis, and which are sadly, most
often the result of the breeders negligence to evaluate their breeding
stock or the partners of their females. In most countries of the
central and western Europe, breed clubs recommend (and some of them
demand in order to issue breeding permits to the dogs) the breeders
to perform those health tests. Slovenian Boxer club demands only
the hips dysplasia results in order to issue the breeding permit,
but also recommends the tests for spondylosis and heart. Sadly,
not many breeders in our country have decided to follow these recommendations.
Since we feel we owe it to the breed in the first place and are
not concerned about the low standards which our club sets, we perform
all of the tests common to the ethical breeders in the rest of Europe.
If one of our dogs fails to pass the test with “flying results”,
but still remains in the allowed “spectrum” for breeding, we make
sure that their partner is absolutely ideal in that concern. If
the dog fails to correspond to the medical demands, we remove that
individual from breeding even if the club rules would allow it to
reproduce, since we do not want to take the responsibility for the
health issues that might emerge in the offspring of our dogs in
the first or in the next generations.
In order to maintain a clear picture of the
health status of our breeding stock, we cooperate with the best
experts in the veterinary science in our country and also abroad.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank to dr. Milan Matko
from the Toplica clinic for his orthopedic expertise, and dr. Asja
Kranjc and dr. Radovan Zajc from the clinic Trstenjak-Zajc for their
cardiological expertise. They have always been there for us, willing
to share their knowledge in order to make our breeding even better.
